There are times when Outlook shows errors.\u00a0 One such error is \u201cCannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The operation failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before we jump into finding solutions to this error, let us look at common causes for this error:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Incorrect installation\/re-installation of Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Improper upgradation of Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Using a profile created in an older version of Outlook in current Outlook version.<\/li>\n<li>Corrupted Outlook PST file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are few solutions to \u201c<em>The set of folders cannot be opened\u201d <\/em>error.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(I) Create a new Outlook profile<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on Windows. In the search window, type Control Panel. Open <strong>Control Panel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Open Mail section by going to <strong>User Accounts -&gt; Mail.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Now click on <strong>Show Profiles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select your current profile and click on<strong> Remove<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In Mail Profiles window, add a new profile by clicking on <strong>Add<\/strong> Enter the name of your new Outlook profile. Click <strong>Ok<\/strong> to save changes.<\/li>\n<li>Now select <strong>Auto Account Setup<\/strong> or <strong>Manual Setup<\/strong> and follow the on-screen instructions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(II)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Start Outlook in Safe mode<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Press <strong>Windows+R<\/strong>. In the search window, enter <strong>Outlook\/safe<\/strong>. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> or click <strong>O<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You can select the profile that you want to log in. If it works fine in Safe mode, the likely issue could be that of Add-ins.<\/li>\n<li>To disable Add-ins, go to <strong>File -&gt;Options -&gt; Add-ins -&gt; COM Add-ins -&gt; Manage -&gt;Go<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uncheck all the Add-ins<\/strong> and click <strong>Ok<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check if Outlook is back to normalcy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(III) Reset Navigation Pane<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Press <strong>Windows+R<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the Run dialog window, type <strong>exe\/resetnavpane<\/strong>. Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> or click <strong>Ok.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Now reopen Outlook.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><strong>(IV)Use scanpst.exe<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use this method if your .ost file is corrupted.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open your computer explorer and type <strong>exe<\/strong> in the search window.<\/li>\n<li>Once you find it, double-click on it.<\/li>\n<li>After it opens, click on <strong>Browse<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now select your corrupted .ost or .pst file. OST file can be found at <strong>C<\/strong>:\\Users\\your_username\\My Documents\\Outlook Files. PST file can be found at C:\\Users\\your_username\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Outlook. Use any of them to repair.<\/li>\n<li>After you selected the file, click on <strong>Start <\/strong>to begin scanning.<\/li>\n<li>After the completion of the scan, you will be asked if you want to repair the file. Click on <strong>Repair<\/strong>. Note that you have to run the repair process a few times to get rid of all the errors.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><strong>(V) Use Cached Exchange Mode<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This works only for Microsoft Exchange users.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type Control Panel in Windows search bar. Go to Control Panel and type Mail.<\/li>\n<li>Now click on Mail icon in search results. In Mail Setup window, click on Data Files. Select your Account and click Settings.<\/li>\n<li>In Advanced, check all three boxes for Use cached exchange mode, Download shared folders and Download public folder favorites. Close the window.
