Issues with Outlook are not uncommon despite being the most popularly used email application. In this post, we discuss a common \u2018Outlook trying to connect\/disconnected\u2019 error.<\/p>\n

Upon encountering this error, emails cannot be sent or received and your communication can come to a halt, which can be extremely frustrating. To help you resolve the error, we explain some troubleshooting steps in this article.<\/p>\n

First of all, let\u2019s start with a background check that will help you identify the root cause of the problem.<\/p>\n

Test 1<\/strong>: Open your browser and check if your internet is working. If it\u2019s working, then the issue may be related to the \u2018mail server\u2019.<\/p>\n

Test 2<\/strong>: To check if the issue is with the \u2018mail server\u2019, log onto \u2018Outlook website\u2019 and check if you can send or receive emails. If your email isn\u2019t working, then there may be an issue with the server. In this case, call your Internet service and ask for help.<\/p>\n

If you pass both the tests described above, there could be an issue with \u2018Outlook account\u2019 or with \u2018updates\u2019. In this case, proceed to learn more about solutions to resolve the same.<\/p>\n

Solution 1: Restart your computer<\/strong><\/p>\n

This may sound like a simple step, but restarting your computer can help resolve certain issues with your system. So try \u2018restarting your computer\u2019 and connect to Outlook.<\/p>\n

Solution 2: Enable Online Mode<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are chances that your Outlook may have switched to \u2018Offline Mode\u2019 without you being aware of it. To resolve this issue, enable \u2018Online Mode\u2019 by following the steps below.<\/p>\n

  1. In the bottom of your Outlook screen, click on \u2018Disconnected<\/strong>\u2019 indicator<\/li>\n
  2. You will find a list of items in the menu that opens. Uncheck \u2018Work Offline<\/strong>\u2019 if you find that it is enabled<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If this solution doesn\u2019t help, you can proceed to the next step which involves creating a new profile.<\/p>\n

    Solution 3: Recreate your profile<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Removing an Outlook profile and creating a new one can also help resolve Outlook issues. You can follow the steps below to do the same.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Click on \u2018Start\u2019<\/strong> menu and go to \u2018Control Panel\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. To see all the icons in Control Panel, change the view to \u2018Small Icons\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. Click \u2018Mail\u2019<\/strong> and select \u2018Show Profiles\u2019<\/strong> in the window that opens<\/li>\n
    4. You will find a list of profiles here; select your profile and click \u2018Remove\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This will delete your profile and you are ready to create a new profile. To create a new profile, go to \u2018Profiles<\/strong>\u2019 using the same steps explained above and click on \u2018Add<\/strong>\u2019 to create a new profile. Once a new profile is created, your Outlook may start functioning well.<\/p>\n

      Solution 4: Use \u2018Safe Mode\u2019 to disable add-ins<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \u2018Safe Mode\u2019 will open Outlook without the add-ins. This may help you identify if the add-ins are the issue. To start Outlook in \u2018Safe Mode\u2019, follow the steps below.<\/p>\n

      1. Click on \u2018Windows + R\u2019<\/strong> to open \u2018Run\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. Type \u2018Outlook.exe\/Safe\u2019 and click \u2018Ok<\/strong>\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Now check if you use Outlook normally. If you can, the problem is likely with add-ins. Now you can go ahead and disable add-ins by following the steps below.<\/p>\n

        1. Click on File > Options > Add-ins<\/strong><\/li>\n
        2. In the \u2018Manage<\/strong>\u2019 drop down menu, select \u2018COM add-ins<\/strong>\u2019 and click \u2018Go\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n
        3. Clear all the \u2018checkboxes\u2019 to disable add-ins; then restart \u2018Outlook\u2019 and check if it works without any issues.<\/li>\n
        4. If your Outlook works fine, select \u2018one\u2019 add-in at a time and restart Outlook. Repeat this step for all the add-ins. This will help you identify the add-in causing trouble. Once that is identified, you can disable it and use Outlook normally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          These are the various troubleshooting steps to resolve Outlook connectivity issues. If any of these solutions worked for you, well and good. If not, you can also try other solutions such as check for \u2018Office updates\u2019 and install the latest ones. Also, make sure your Outlook is not running in compatibility mode.
