No worries! This is one of the most common issues encountered by numerous Outlook clients. And, there are certain things that will help you to fix this Outlook search indexing problem. Let\u2019s go through one by one.<\/p>\n

  1. Verify Your Outlook is Submitted for Indexing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2019, and Office 365<\/p>\n

    Go to File menu,<\/strong> select Options<\/strong> then, click on Search. <\/strong>Under\u00a0Sources<\/strong>, click\u00a0on the Indexing Options<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

    Check Index these location<\/strong> items and make sure Microsoft Outlook<\/strong> is listed. Click the\u00a0Modify button.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Check Microsoft Outlook is enabled under Change selected locations category (In Indexed Locations dialogue box).<\/strong><\/p>\n

    In older versions of Microsoft Outlook, Search Options<\/strong> window can be reached using below navigation paths.<\/p>\n

    In Outlook 2007:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Tools<\/em> -> Options<\/em> -> Search<\/em> Options<\/em> (here you can select data file to index).<\/p>\n

    In Outlook 2010, 2016:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    File<\/em> -> Options<\/em> -> Search<\/em>-> Indexing<\/em> Options<\/em> -> Modify<\/em>-> expand Microsoft<\/em> Outlook<\/em>\u00a0(here you need to select PST file or mailbox listed under Microsoft Outlook).<\/p>\n

    If your Outlook profile is marked for indexing, then try disabling it first. Then safely close Outlook and remove it from the Task Manager running processes. At last, open Outlook and enable it in Search options.<\/p>\n

    1. Rebuild The Index<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      If index itself is damaged, then above technique doesn\u2019t help you. So, you have to rebuild the index in order to solve this issue.<\/p>\n

      How to Rebuild Outlook Index?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Open Outlook, go to File <\/strong>menu, select Options <\/strong>and click Search<\/strong>. Click on the\u00a0Indexing Options <\/strong>button located under the Sources <\/strong>section.<\/p>\n

      Choose Advanced <\/strong>option located next to Modify<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      In the Index Setting<\/strong> tab, click the Rebuild <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n

      Say OK<\/strong> for the notification.<\/p>\n

      Close <\/strong>the window\u00a0when the rebuilding process is completed.<\/p>\n

      1. Check PST File for Corruptions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        It might be a corrupt or damaged PST file that is causing search indexing problems in your Outlook. Yes! When a PST file gets constantly corrupt<\/u><\/a> or damaged due to any reason, then it has a direct effect on the functionality of the Outlook including indexing.<\/p>\n

        To verify this, scan your Outlook data file- PST using the ScanPST (an inbuilt Inbox Repair tool offered by MS Outlook). You can find this scanpst.exe file in the same folder as your Outlook.exe.<\/p>\n

        Steps to Run ScanPST:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Double-click on Scanpst.exe <\/strong>file. Use the Browse<\/strong> option, select your Outlook PST file, and click the Start<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

        If any errors are detected, check the checkbox make a backup of the scanned file<\/em> and start the Repair<\/strong> process.<\/p>\n

        Note:<\/strong> Sometimes, Inbox repair tool stops working all of a sudden. Many Outlook users are also reported that ScanPST.exe not responding during repair<\/u><\/a>. This is because the PST file is severely corrupted and it is beyond repair for the inbuilt repair tool. In such cases, it is suggested to make use of a result-oriented third-party PST repair tools available online.<\/p>\n
