Steps for Solving QuickTime Codec Error

QuickTime Can't Open M4V

As we know, video file requires appropriate codecs to open in QuickTime media player. Absence of these codecs result in unplayable video file and you will get notified with the following error message -

“The document could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.”

The above error message also pop ups when your video files get corrupted due to the presence of corrupted or broken codec. What can be done to fix QuickTime Codec error? Well! there are two different methods which you can opt to solve the QuickTime codec error.

Solution 1- If error is due to codecs unavailability

If this error is due to the absence of appropriate codecs, then you need to install them. Before installing the codecs, you need to find which types of codecs are supported by the media player. To find the supported codecs –

  • Go to QuickTime media player and play the respective video
  • Then, open Inspector window, here you will find the codec details

If required information is not available in the inspector window, go to Finder and click on Get Info window of the corresponding file to view the codecs.

Once you find the codecs, download them from the web and place them inside /Library/QuickTime folder on Mac computer. Then, restart the media player.

Solution 2: If codec error due to video corruption
