How to Fix “Disk is Full” Error While Saving MS Word Document?

The problem:

In Microsoft Word, when trying to save the document, you may receive the following error message:

“The disk is full trying to write to C: Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk. Try one of the following:

  • Close any unneeded documents, programs and windows.
  • Save the document on another disk.”

“The disk is full or too many files are open.”

“We are sorry. We can’t open Doc1.docx because we found a problem with its contents.”

Cause for the Error – “The Disk is Full” on MS Word

The above errors will appear when you save your document to a disk that does not have enough free space. When you work in Word, Microsoft Word saves the file with a temporary file name (.tmp file extension) and places this file in the same directory as the original file. When you save the file, the original file is then deleted and the temporary file is renamed with the original file name. Therefore, the amount of free disk space on the drive must be greater than twice the file size being saved. If it is not, then you will receive the message "Disk is Full."

To get rid of the error, copy the file to your hard disk drive or to another disk that has sufficient free space before opening it in Excel.

If still the problem exists, then the error may be due to one of the following reasons

  • Corrupt or damaged hyperlinks embed in Word document
  • Framing complex equations by using symbols, typing variables, numbers and others
  • Embedding incompatible picture, video and animation file formats in Word documents
  • Word file corrupted or problems with objects embedded in Word file due to virus attack, improper handling, etc.

Under such instances, the Word document showing disk full error while saving might be repaired using “Open and Repair” option provided by Microsoft Suite. If your Word document is not fixed even after using this option, then you need to use Word file repair software – Remo Repair Word Software.
