How to Fix Codec Missing or Unavailable?

“Hi, I received a few .mov files from one of my clients. The problem with those MOV files is every time when I import them to Adobe Premiere I get the error message “Codec missing or unavailable”. I also tried to import those MOV videos into Media Encoder and change their file types, but I couldn’t import either. I searched online for the MOV file Codec missing or unavailable solution, but I haven’t been able to find any.”

You can import MOV files to Adobe Premiere, but you cannot load all MOV file formats using this video editing tool. Since Adobe Premiere imports MOV files based on the codecs or decoders installed in it.

Since the MOV file container comprises data encoded with various compression and encoding algorithms, Adobe Premiere requires respective codecs to import and decompress your MOV files.

When Adobe Premiere doesn’t have the needed codecs to decompress MOV file which you are trying to import then it gives the “Codec Missing or Unavailable” error.

How To Fix Codec Missing or Unavailable Error?

Method 1: Install Codecs For Premiere

Many times, the codecs which you install on your Windows operating system or Mac OS works as a component for the video player or video files that you are trying to play. So, by installing more codecs in your system, you can prolong the Adobe Premiere capability to import more MOV file types.

Part 1: Download The Codecs

Step 1: Right-click on your MOV file, which codec info you want.

Step 2: Click on Properties, go to Summary and see file description.

Step 3: You can see the MOV file’s video compression and audio format details.

These are the required codecs for your MOV files. Download those codecs required to import your MOV files from the official Adobe Premiere website.

Part 2: Install Codecs for Adobe Premiere

Step 1: Open the downloaded codec file. If it is a ZIP file, extract it. And, right-click on the .inf file.

Step 2: Next, click on the Install button. Opt Continue when a notification appears asking for permission to install the codec.

That’s all! your codec is installed and it appears in Adobe Premiere.

Note: Adobe doesn’t recommend to install additional codecs the (exclusion of the Vista codec pack) to Premiere Pro because it may cause issues with the Adobe program. Instead, Adobe support suggests users install G-Spot– a free tool to detect all installed codecs on a computer.

Method 2: Convert MOV File

Convert your MOV files to Adobe Premiere compatible file format using free media player VLC.

Suggested: Try this on a copy of your MOV file.

Step 1: Open VLC, go to Media and select the Convert/Save option.

Step 2: Click Add…, select your MOV file, and hit the Convert/Save button.

Step 3: Click on the tools symbol (Edit Selected Profile) located next to the Profile list.

Step 4: Select Video codec, uncheck Keep original video track, in Encoding parameters, choose the MPEG-1 codec and hit Create.

Step 5: Select Audio codec, uncheck Keep original audio track, in Encoding parameters, choose MPEG AUDIO codec and hit Create.

Step 6: Click on the Browse button, mention destination location and name for the converted video, and choose Save.

Step 7: Finally, click on the Start button to begin the video conversion process.

Now, import the converted video into Adobe Premiere.

Sometimes, you cannot import MOV video clips into Premiere or the video fails to play on any of the media players if the file is broken or damaged.
