Fix Skipping and Lagging in VLC Playing High-Def Video Files

Sometimes, HD video freezes every few seconds while playing in VLC media player. In any case, if you encounter this kind of situation while using VLC Media Player, then follow the techniques mentioned below and get the issue fixed in few minutes.

Technique #1: Increase Cache Values

  1. Go to Tools > Preferences
  2. Click on All in Show Settings
  3. Next, navigate to Advanced settings and select Input / Codecs
  4. In Input / Codecs, modify the values for File caching (ms) from 300 to a higher value like 1000 or 2000, under Advanced

Technique #2: Alter Video Output Settings

  • Open VLC Media Player
  • Select Tools and then Preferences from the menu bar
  • In the Preferences window, select Video
  • In the Video Settings, change the value from Automatic to DirectX (DirectDraw) video output
  • Then, hit Save button

Technique #3: FFmpeg Loop Filter Skipping

  1. Go to Tools and then select Preferences or else click on CTRL + P
  2. Go to Show settings and select All to switch from Simple to Advanced Preferences radio button
  3. Then, go to Input / Codecs > Video Codecs > FFmpeg
  4. Under FFmpeg audio/video decoder, search for the option Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding.
  5. Change it from None to All
