Guide to Fix Black Screen When Playing Videos

There is a situation where you might get a black screen while playing video. It can be due to various reasons, including video corruption. In case, you are one among them who have witnessed black screen during video playback, then try out the below fixes to overcome this issue.

Workaround #1: Lower Video Card’s Hardware Acceleration

Reducing the hardware acceleration for graphics cards helps to correct the issues which you may face while playing video. To minimize hardware acceleration, follow the below steps-

  1. Right click on Monitor and select Properties
  2. Next, press Display Settings
  3. Choose Advanced Settings under display settings
  4. Click on Troubleshoot tab
  5. Then, hit Change Settings
  6. Next, click on Reduce Hardware Acceleration

Workaround #2: Reinstall your Media Player

Sometimes, you get the black screen while playing video due to media player malfunction. Hence, reinstall Windows media player. For uninstalling navigate to Control Panel-> Programs and Features.

  1. In Programs and Features window, click Turn Windows features on or off option
  2. In the Windows Features window, select Media Features and unmark Windows Media Player
  3. Next, click on OK

To reinstall Windows media player, follow the same steps and at the end check Windows Media Player check box. If you are using other media players, go to Control Panel-> Programs and Features. Next, from the right hand of the screen, scroll down to select media player. Next, right click on it and hit uninstall button. To reinstall the media player, go back to setup file and double click on it. Then, follow on-screen instructions to install it.

Workaround #3: Uninstall and install the Driver

Corrupted or outdated driver is also one of the main reasons for black screen while playing the video file. Hence, do as follows to install and uninstall it.

  1. Navigate to Control Panel->Device Manager
  2. Select the driver and right click on it to select Uninstall option
  3. After confirming, hit Ok button
  4. It will uninstall the driver

Once, you get an updated driver or healthy driver, reinstall it.

Workaround #4: Repair Video File
