“Cannot move the items. The folders you are trying to change do not support this operation. Could not complete the operation because the service provider does not support it.”

OR

“Cannot move items. The item cannot be moved. It was either already moved or deleted, or access was denied.”

There could be several reasons why this error occurred. Let us look at some solutions:

  1. Split Oversized Outlook File

In several cases, it was seen that the file users were trying to move is a large PST file. If this is the case with you, you should split this large PST file into smaller sized files.

You can split your PST file using Import and Export feature on Outlook.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook on your system.
  • Click File – > New Items -> More Items -> Outlook Data File.
  • Create or Open Outlook Data File window appears. Select a location where you want to save this file and name this new Outlook Data file and click OK. This creates a new Outlook data file.
  • Now click File – > Open -> Import.
  • Import and Export Wizard Select Export to a file option from the list and click Next.
  • Now choose Outlook Data File and click Next.
  • Now select the folder to export from.
  • Click Browse to select a file in which you want to export.
  • Open Outlook Data Files window opens. Now select the file in which you want to export and click OK.
  • You can now see your selected Outlook data file in the edit box.
  • Click Finish to begin the process.

A new window Create Outlook Data File opens. You can apply the password to protect the file or click Cancel.

This procedure creates a new PST file.

  1. Reset permission to the file

Some files or folders are password protected. Only the system administrator will have rights to copy or make any sort of changes to the file.

You have to reset this permission, before moving this file to folders.

  1. Repair your Outlook file with ScanPST.exe

You cannot move the items on your Outlook if the PST file is corrupted.

You can repair the PST file using Microsoft’s inbuilt repair tool scanpst.exe.

You can find the scanpst.exe file:

On Outlook 2007 and previous editions: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

On Outlook 2010 and onwards:

  • Double-click on scanpst.exe file.
  • Click on Browse and select the corrupt or damaged PST file.
  • Now click on Start to begin the scanning process.
  • The repair tool scans the file and lists down errors.
  • To repair these errors, click on Repair.
