It is a well-known fact that Outlook can do more than just send or receive emails. It is referred to as a personal information manager; meaning it can be used to manage your multiple email accounts, contacts, calendars, appointments all in one place.

In addition to all of this, Outlook also allows you to access emails, calendar, appointments and other info even when you’re offline. This is made possible through a file called OST (or PST) that stores all Outlook data on your local computer.

Occasionally you may encounter issues when using Offline Mode. And today in this article, we discuss an error that reads ‘Cannot open Outlook in offline mode’ and some solutions to resolve the same.

Solution 1: Generate a new OST file

Normally, this error is seen when your OST file is corrupt. Corruption can happen due to various reasons such as network issues during OST synchronization process, bad sectors on the drive where the file is stored etc.

Thankfully, it is possible to download a new OST file to replace the corrupt one. To do so, follow the steps below.

1. Launch Outlook and click on File > Info
2. Select Account Settings > Account Settings
3. In the Email tab, select Microsoft Exchange > Settings > More Settings
4. In the Advanced tab under More Settings, select Offline Folder File Settings
5. Browse a location to save your OST file and click Ok

Now that a new OST file is created, go ahead and delete the old one. To delete the old OST file, follow the steps below.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open Run dialogue
2. Type ‘%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\’ and hit Enter
3. Now identify the old OST file and click on Delete to delete the old OST file

Solution 2: Use Remo OST to PST converter

Outlook is no doubt a great email application, but sometimes, one can experience problems with it. In this article, we discuss an error ‘0x8004010F’ that is normally seen when sending or receiving emails.

Why does the ‘0x8004010f’ error occur? The main reasons for this error are corruption in Outlook profile or corruption in PST files.

Now that we know when and why the occur occurs, let’s move on to the solutions to resolve the error.

Solution 1: Create a new profile

Step 1: Make note of the data file

1. Open Outlook and click on File > Info tab
2. Then select Account Settings > Account Settings
3. Click on Data files

Here note down the name and location of your PST data file.

Step 2: Create a new Outlook profile

There are 2 methods to do this, one is the automated profile creation and the second one is a manual method.

Option 1: Using automated profile set up

1. Click on the Start button and search for Control Panel
2. Open Control Panel and search for Mail
3. In the Mail setup box, click on Show Profiles
4. In the General tab, click on Add and in the new account set up a box, enter all the required details and click Next

Option 2: Manual profile creation

1. Using the same method as above (in Option 1), open the Mail setup box
2. Click on Show Profiles and in the General tab, click on Add
3. In the New Profile set up the box, enter the required information and click Ok
4. In the Add New account setup box, click on Manually configure server settings or additional server types
5. Under Choose Service, select Internet Email and enter your account details in the account setup box
6. Choose Test Account settings to test your account
7. Click on Existing Outlook data file and choose your data file as noted in Step 1
8. Then close all the dialogue boxes to complete setting up your new account

Step 3: Make your Outlook profile as the default

Once you are done, a new account is created which you can use as your default profile. To make the new profile as your default profile, follow the steps below

1. Again open Mail from the Control Panel
2. In the General tab, choose Always use this profile
3. In the drop-down menu for Always use this profile, select the new profile you just created
4. Then close the Mail dialogue box

Solution 2: Use Remo PST repair software

Creating a new Outlook profile will help you resolve the error in most cases. However, if your PST file is corrupt and you are using the same file in the new profile, the error may still persist. This article discusses a common error faced by Outlook users when sending or reading emails. The error message reads ‘Reported error (0x80042108): Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) email server’.

This error usually occurs mainly due to incorrect configuration settings or due to corruption in PST files. It could also be due to anti-virus interfering with server connection. So, as a first step, you can disable anti-virus temporarily and check if Outlook works normally. If not, proceed with the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the error.

Solution 1: Run Outlook in Safe Mode

Using Safe Mode avoids the possibility of add-ins interfering with your Outlook and causing errors.

1. To open Outlook in Safe Mode, press Windows + R to open Run window
2. Type ‘Outlook/safe’ and hit Enter

If Outlook functions normally in Safe Mode, you can conclude that the error is caused by add-ins. In that case, try disabling add-ins, restart Outlook and confirm that add-ins is the culprit.

Solution 2: Allow Outlook through Firewall

The Windows Firewall may at times interfere with Outlook’s server and cause errors such as ‘0x80042108’. You can turn OFF Firewall for Outlook and check if it helps.

1. Click on the Start menu and type Firewall in the Search bar
2. Click on Windows Firewall from the results and select Turn Windows Firewall ON or OFF
3. Select Turn off Windows Firewall on both private and public networks

Now open Outlook and check if the error is fixed. If it is, proceed with the following steps. If not, turn the Firewall back ON.

1. Click Allow an app through on the ‘Windows Firewall tab’
2. Click on Change Settings, select Outlook and save changes
3. Turn ON the Firewall

Solution 3: Turn On Windows Update Service

To turn on ‘Windows Update Service’, follow the steps below.

1. Open Start menu and type ‘Service’ in the Search bar and click on Services from the list of results
2. Under ‘Windows Update Service’, click on Windows Update and select Automatic from the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu
3. Click on Apply to apply and save the changes
4. Restart Outlook and check if it resolves the error

Solution 4: Repair PST file using Inbox Repair tool

If none of the above fixes resolve the error, you can try repairing the PST file. A PST file is a data file that saves all Outlook data on your local computer. Any corruption or damage in this file can also produce errors.

In order to repair corruption in PST files, you can use a built-in tool called Scanpst.exe that is already present in your computer.

1. Open ‘File Explorer’ on your system and type ‘Scanpst.exe’
2. Then double-click on the file to run it
3. Click on Browse to select your PST file. (You can find the location of PST by opening Outlook > File > Info > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data files)
4. Click on Repair to repair the selected file

Scanpst.exe is a great tool to repair PST files that can repair certain types of corruption issues. However, if the file is too large or severely corrupted, you may run into issues such as Scanpst not responding etc.

If Scanpst.exe fails to repair your file, there is a possibility that the PST file is severely corrupt. In such cases, you can use professional repair tools such as Remo Repair PST.

Issues with Outlook are not uncommon despite being the most popularly used email application. In this post, we discuss a common ‘Outlook trying to connect/disconnected’ error.

Solution 1: Restart your computer

This may sound like a simple step, but restarting your computer can help resolve certain issues with your system. So try ‘restarting your computer’ and connect to Outlook.

Solution 2: Enable Online Mode

There are chances that your Outlook may have switched to ‘Offline Mode’ without you being aware of it. To resolve this issue, enable ‘Online Mode’ by following the steps below.

1. In the bottom of your Outlook screen, click on ‘Disconnected’ indicator
2. You will find a list of items in the menu that opens. Uncheck ‘Work Offline’ if you find that it is enabled

If this solution doesn’t help, you can proceed to the next step which involves creating a new profile.

Solution 3: Recreate your profile

Removing an Outlook profile and creating a new one can also help resolve Outlook issues. You can follow the steps below to do the same.

1. Click on ‘Start’ menu and go to ‘Control Panel’
2. To see all the icons in Control Panel, change the view to ‘Small Icons’
3. Click ‘Mail’ and select ‘Show Profiles’ in the window that opens
4. You will find a list of profiles here; select your profile and click ‘Remove’

This will delete your profile and you are ready to create a new profile. To create a new profile, go to ‘Profiles’ using the same steps explained above and click on ‘Add’ to create a new profile. Once a new profile is created, your Outlook may start functioning well.

Solution 4: Use ‘Safe Mode’ to disable add-ins

‘Safe Mode’ will open Outlook without the add-ins. This may help you identify if the add-ins are the issue. To start Outlook in ‘Safe Mode’, follow the steps below.

1. Click on ‘Windows + R’ to open ‘Run’
2. Type ‘Outlook.exe/Safe’ and click ‘Ok’

Now check if you use Outlook normally. If you can, the problem is likely with add-ins. Now you can go ahead and disable add-ins by following the steps below.

1. Click on File > Options > Add-ins
2. In the ‘Manage’ drop down menu, select ‘COM add-ins’ and click ‘Go’
3. Clear all the ‘checkboxes’ to disable add-ins; then restart ‘Outlook’ and check if it works without any issues.
4. If your Outlook works fine, select ‘one’ add-in at a time and restart Outlook. Repeat this step for all the add-ins. This will help you identify the add-in causing trouble. Once that is identified, you can disable it and use Outlook normally.

These are the various troubleshooting steps to resolve Outlook connectivity issues. If any of these solutions worked for you, well and good. If not, you can also try other solutions such as check for ‘Office updates’ and install the latest ones. Also, make sure your Outlook is not running in compatibility mode. These are simple yet powerful methods to resolve connectivity issues in Outlook.
